India and West Indies Fined for Slow Over-Rates in Third ODI
India and the West Indies have both been punished for slow over-rates during the third and final ODI of their series in New Chandigarh.
India were fined 20 per cent of their match fees after being judged to be four overs behind the required rate once all permitted time allowances had been taken into account. The West Indies were two overs short and received a 10 per cent fine.
The sanctions were imposed by Prakash Bhatt of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their team fails to complete within the allotted time.
Both captains accepted responsibility for the offences and pleaded guilty. As a result, there was no requirement for formal disciplinary hearings.
The charges were brought by the match officials, with Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sam Nogajski serving as the on-field umpires. Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid was the third umpire, while Virender Sharma acted as the fourth umpire.
Despite the disciplinary issue, the West Indies ended the ODI series with a memorable victory. Having already lost the first two matches, they produced a remarkable performance in New Chandigarh to defeat India in the final game.
Captain Shai Hope played the leading role, remaining unbeaten on 162 as the West Indies successfully chased India's total of 351. The victory represented their highest successful run chase in men's ODI cricket.
India had entered the final match with the three-match series already secured, but the West Indies' record-breaking chase provided a major boost after two defeats.
The result also means the teams will quickly have another opportunity to meet. India and the West Indies are scheduled to begin a five-match T20I series on October 6, with attention now shifting from the ODI format to the shortest form of the game.
For both sides, the slow-over-rate penalties serve as an unwanted reminder of the importance of maintaining the required pace during international matches. India will now look to respond in the T20I series, while the West Indies will hope their impressive ODI finale can provide momentum for the next phase of the tour.
