Mercedes’ Antonelli Eager to Re-establish Order as F1 Returns to Malaysia Kimi Antonelli arrived at Sepang determined to put a difficult weekend in Azerbaijan behind him and reassert his authority at the top of the Formula 1 championship. The Mercedes driver entered the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia still leading the Drivers’ Championship, but his advantage over team-mate George Russell had been reduced to 66 points after a disappointing weekend in Baku. Antonelli had finished fifth in Azerbaijan after a difficult qualifying session that saw him start from 16th. It was a rare weekend in which Russell clearly had the upper hand, with the Briton taking a dominant victory and significantly closing the championship gap. The Italian was determined that the result would not become a pattern. “I'm always going to have him as my rival,” Antonelli said when discussing Russell’s title challenge. “But I'll make sure I re-establish the order and just make sure that I am back to my usual level.” Antonelli admitted that he had not felt completely comfortable in Baku. He described his driving there as being far below his normal level and acknowledged that he lacked the confidence needed to push the car to its maximum. That made the return to Sepang particularly important. Malaysia was hosting Formula 1 for the first time since 2017, with the Sepang International Circuit stepping in as the venue for the relocated Bahrain Grand Prix. The original Bahrain race could not take place as planned because of the security situation in the Middle East. The championship battle also added another layer of pressure. Antonelli had built a substantial lead earlier in the season, winning eight races, but Russell’s victory in Azerbaijan suddenly brought his team-mate back into contention. Russell made no secret of his ambition to challenge for the championship, while Antonelli remained focused on controlling the situation at the top. For Mercedes, the internal battle is becoming increasingly important as the season approaches its final stages. Ferrari and Red Bull remain capable of influencing the outcome, with Max Verstappen also showing strong pace in recent races. Sepang presented another major test because of its demanding layout, high temperatures and challenging tyre management. The circuit’s long straights and fast corners can place significant demands on both the car and the driver. Antonelli responded strongly on track. He topped final practice and then secured third on the starting grid for the race after a track-limits issue compromised his qualifying session. He believed a front-row start had been possible without the deleted lap. The Italian then delivered when it mattered most on race day. He finished second behind Verstappen, while Russell suffered a late retirement with a suspected power-unit failure. That result allowed Antonelli to extend his championship advantage from 66 points to 84, giving him a significant boost in the title battle. For Antonelli, the weekend therefore became the response he had been looking for. Rather than allowing the disappointment of Azerbaijan to affect his momentum, he recovered strongly and strengthened his position at the top of the championship. With the title fight entering its decisive phase, Mercedes now have Antonelli back in control — and the young Italian has made it clear that he intends to remain there.
