Ronaldo Explains Portugal Dispute and Confirms He Remains Available for Selection Cristiano Ronaldo has publicly addressed the dispute that led to his departure from Portugal's training camp, providing his version of the events involving head coach Jorge Jesus and making it clear that he has not retired from international football. In a lengthy statement released on Tuesday, October 6, Ronaldo said a series of disagreements over his involvement in Portugal's Nations League matches eventually resulted in a breakdown of trust between him and the manager. The 41-year-old forward explained that there had initially been an agreement concerning his participation in the matches against Norway and Denmark. According to Ronaldo, the plan was intended to manage his physical condition. However, he said Jesus later told him that he might play around 30 minutes against Norway. Ronaldo warmed up during the match but was ultimately left on the bench for the entire game. For Ronaldo, that decision represented the first major breach of the understanding they had reached. A Second Disagreement Followed Ronaldo said the situation became even more difficult after a meeting involving himself, Jesus and Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho. According to the Portugal captain, the meeting resulted in an agreement that Jesus would publicly explain what had happened during a subsequent press conference. An eight-point document was reportedly prepared outlining the circumstances, including that Ronaldo had never demanded playing time and that the decision to have him warm up without eventually bringing him onto the pitch had been a mistake. Ronaldo claims that the coach's comments at the press conference did not match what had been discussed privately. He described this as the second time Jesus had failed to keep his word and said he subsequently decided to leave the national team's training camp. Jesus, however, has disputed Ronaldo's account of the agreement. The Portuguese coach previously said he had not made such a promise, while also making it clear that the door remained open for Ronaldo to return to the national team. Ronaldo Apologises Despite his criticism of the coach, Ronaldo accepted responsibility for his own actions. The forward apologized to his teammates and Portuguese supporters for leaving the training camp and acknowledged that his position as captain made the incident more serious. He also said he was prepared to accept whatever disciplinary punishment the Portuguese Football Federation decides to impose. Ronaldo emphasized that he has never attempted to interfere with tactical decisions made by Portugal's coaches throughout his international career. He said that while he accepts decisions made by managers, trust and honesty are particularly important to him. International Retirement Is Not His Immediate Plan Despite the dispute, Ronaldo made perhaps the most important point of his statement clear: he remains available to represent Portugal. The Al Nassr forward said that if he is physically fit, continues playing for his club and serves any suspension imposed by the Portuguese Football Federation, he will be ready to return to the national team. Ronaldo also rejected the idea that his remaining international ambitions are simply about receiving a farewell appearance. For him, representing Portugal remains primarily about competing and winning. Portugal's Door Remains Open Jorge Jesus has also indicated that Ronaldo could return to the squad. Following Portugal's recent Nations League matches, Jesus said the decision ultimately belongs to Ronaldo and that he would be welcomed back if he chooses to continue his international career. That leaves the situation unresolved but significantly different from the impression created when Ronaldo initially left the training camp. The dispute between the captain and coach remains a major talking point, but Ronaldo's latest statement confirms that he has not closed the door on Portugal. For now, his future with the national team appears to depend on the disciplinary process, his relationship with Jorge Jesus and whether both sides can move beyond the breakdown in trust. One thing, however, is clear from Ronaldo's latest message: he still wants the opportunity to compete and win for Portugal.
