# Benni McCarthy Proud of Kenya Despite Disappointing Eritrea Draw
Benni McCarthy has defended his Kenya players after their underwhelming 1-1 draw with Eritrea in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
The Harambee Stars were expected to take control against Eritrea at Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium, but were forced to come from behind after Nahom Girmai gave the visitors the lead in the first half.
Kenya eventually rescued a point late in the match when Ryan Ogam converted in the 86th minute following good work from substitute Ben Stanley Omondi.
Despite the disappointing result, McCarthy insisted he had plenty of reasons to be proud of his squad.
**Limited Preparation Affected Kenya**
The South African coach acknowledged that Kenya’s preparation had been far from ideal. The team had very little time to train together before the match, which affected their organisation and sharpness in front of goal.
McCarthy felt the lack of preparation was particularly noticeable in the final third, where Kenya created opportunities but failed to convert enough of them.
Ryan Ogam had several chances before eventually finding the equaliser, and the coach believes the striker could have been more clinical under normal circumstances.
**McCarthy Defends His Players**
Although supporters were unhappy with the result, McCarthy refused to single out individuals for criticism.
The coach praised the players for their determination and commitment, arguing that Kenya were the better side for large periods despite the difficult circumstances surrounding the team.
He believes that with additional training sessions, Kenya can improve their organisation, reduce defensive mistakes and become more efficient in attack.
**Confidence in Goalkeeper Omondi**
McCarthy also backed goalkeeper Byrne Omondi after his mistake contributed to Eritrea’s opening goal.
The coach compared Omondi’s physical presence and potential to experienced Ugandan goalkeeper Denis Onyango, insisting that he has great confidence in the goalkeeper.
McCarthy believes Omondi has the ability to play at a higher level and stressed that his performances in the national team have earned the coaching staff’s trust.
**Attention Now Turns to Guinea**
Kenya cannot dwell on the dropped points for long, with Guinea next on the schedule.
The Harambee Stars travel to Conakry looking for a stronger performance and a more clinical display in front of goal.
McCarthy will hope that improved preparation allows his team to show the quality he believes they possess and turn their chances into goals.
