India and West Indies Fined After Slow Over Rates in New Chandigarh ODI
India and the West Indies have both been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council after failing to maintain the required over rate during the third and final ODI of their series in New Chandigarh.
India were fined 20 per cent of their match fees after being found to be four overs short of the required rate once time allowances had been taken into account. West Indies were two overs short and received a 10 per cent fine.
The sanctions were imposed by Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees member Prakash Bhatt. Both captains accepted responsibility for the offences and pleaded guilty, meaning that formal hearings were not required.
The charges were brought by the match officials, including on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sam Nogajski, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Virender Sharma. The penalties were applied under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate offences.
Despite the disciplinary action, the West Indies had plenty to celebrate after producing one of their most memorable ODI victories in recent years. Chasing 352, Shai Hope remained unbeaten on 162 as his team completed their highest successful run chase in men's ODI cricket.
The result also gave the West Indies a strong finish to a series that India had already secured by winning the opening two matches. India therefore claimed the three-match series 2-1, while the visitors ended the ODI leg of their tour with a historic victory.
The New Chandigarh contest was a remarkable batting encounter. India posted 351 before West Indies chased down the target, with Hope leading the response. His 162 not out was not only a match-winning innings but also broke a long-standing West Indies record for the highest score by a batter in a successful ODI chase.
The slow-over-rate penalties now provide an unwanted footnote to an otherwise memorable match. Under ICC regulations, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their team falls short of the allotted time, after applicable allowances are considered.
India and West Indies will not have to wait long to meet again. The two teams are scheduled to begin a five-match T20I series in Lucknow on October 6, with further matches taking place in Ranchi, Indore, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
For India, the immediate focus will be on correcting their bowling and over-rate issues after a difficult final ODI. For West Indies, the challenge will be to carry the confidence from their record-breaking chase into the T20I series.
